7th and 8th grade students are often forgetful, or simply want to avoid homework, and so I have frequently had parents who think their child never has homework in my class. To avoid confusion, let me clarify.
I do not believe in excessive homework, as it is not known to be a determining factor in future success. However, you can expect to see these assignments at home: (1) any work that is not completed in class. If a student chooses to talk rather than work, or if he/she wants to go beyond expectation, then the work needs completed at home. (2) four book projects per year (one per quarter). The project takes about 1-2 hours to complete, depending on the level of effort a student wishes to exhibit. (3) MELP may have additional reading requirements in regards to at-home reading. (4) study for weekly stem quizzes. We study in class, but some students find memorization more challenging and might need to spend an extra 10-15 minutes on this at home. (5) read a book of your own choice. This must be done to do the book project. The book should be enjoyable and not too challenging, as reading for fun is the best way to improve basic skills.
