Grading Policy In this class, I grade most work in one of two ways. (1) Stem list quizzes, tests, or multiple-choice type assignments are mostly memory recall and are thusly graded per item (e.g. if there are 15 questions, each is worth one point) and are typically weighted at 10 points in the gradebook. (2) Assignments that require more complex skill sets--such as essays, analysis, and projects--are graded as per content standards using a scale of 1-4 for proficiency. You will learn what I am looking for by both practicing self-scoring and by our use of rubrics. These are weighted in the gradebook for difficulty and time. An assignment of one day is probably 10 points, whereas a complex project will be worth more. (3) Participation or "learning process" assignments (such as group or partner work, coming prepared, and participating in silent reading) are graded also for proficiency; these grades cannot be revised.
Proficiency Scoring 1=, emergent; this is a D 2=needs development; approaching; this is a C 3=meets goal (mastery); this is a B 4=complete; goes beyond mastery; this is an A NG=too little work complete; this is a zero.
Should a student turn in work that isn't completely finished? There is one simple answer: yes, it is better to turn in an assignment that is partially complete rather than take a zero on it.
Can work be turned in late? Work usually falls into two categories: in class and homework. (1) In class work: can be turned in up to 9 days late, but each day it is late it will lose 10%. So an assignment that is 9 days late will get 10% at most. (2) homework: cannot be turned in late. All of my homework assignments are given with at least 4 days notice (sometimes, weeks notice!) and so these assignments cannot be turned in late. This includes stem list work, book projects, novel reading guides for the at-home novel, and reading logs.
What if class is missed due to illness, quarantine, or family event? Does the late policy still apply? If a student misses class, the missing work needs to be collected and returned within 2 days of coming back. After the 2-day grace period, the work will be considered late. If class is missed on a day that a book project is due, it is best to email the project to the teacher. Otherwise, it needs turned in the day the student returns. Missed quizzes and tests will need made up before or after school.
Why is an assignment marked missing in Powerschool? Because it was never turned in or was turned in less than 30% complete.
Can students re-do an assignment for a higher score? YES YES AND YES *The original assignment was not turned in more than 2 days late. *Original assignment was at least 70% completed (shows honest effort). *Complete the re-do within a week of getting your work back. *Attach the original assignment to the fixed work. *Make meaningful, thoughtful revisions to the original--not just add one or two words. **tests, quizzes, and multiple-choice assignments cannot be revised.
